LSE Library&#;s Sonia Gomes explores Dame Mary Eugenia Charles’ student journey at LSE. Later Dominica&#;s first female prime minister, Charles came to post-war London to study law in the late s before returning to the Caribbean to set up her own legal practice and, eventually, political party.

Charles was the youngest of four, born in the Caribbean island of Dominica in She was thought of as the troublesome child. Her first battle with the authorities happened at the age of four, on her first day in school, when she refused to sit in her assigned seat for wanting to sit next to her playmate. She screamed the place down until allowed to do just that.

It was this lifelong determination that enabled her to be the first and only female prime minister in Dominica, the longest serving female prime minister in Dominica, the second in the Caribbean region and the world’s third, to date.
