    Description:

    The painting was conceived as an altarpiece for the Chapel of the Confraternity of the Papal Grooms (who following the abolition of horseback retinues had the privilege of accompanying the Pope during ceremonies) located in Saint Peter's Basilica. Commissioned in 1605, it was delivered shortly afterward and placed on the altar, before being immediately removed and transferred to the nearby Church of St. Anne, protector of the Confraternity.
